چکیده

Rotator cuff tears are highly prevelant, afflicting approximately 20% of the population [1]. Rotator cuff tears often lead to atrophy of the injured muscle(s), which has been associated with poor functional outcomes [2]. Surgical repair is commonly performed, followed by a period of shoulder immobilization by means of an orthosis. The purpose of the immobilization is to protect the integrity of the repair during the immediate post-operative period. There is, however, no consensus on the best postures for post-operative shoulder immobilization, and furthermore, the effect, if any, of muscle atrophy on the postures. The purpose of this work was to simulate supraspinatus tears with varying degrees of muscle atrophy to determine the effect of atrophy on optimal postoperative shoulder immobilization postures.

Effect of Scapular Dyskinesis on Supraspinatus Tendon Healing in a Rat Model

Introduction Rotator cuff tears are common conditions that often require surgical repair to improve function and relieve pain. Unfortunately, despite pain relief, the success associated with repair integrity is mixed, with 5-95% of patients having recurrent tears, resulting in decreased strength and function. Several factors may contribute to repair failure including age, tear size, and time fr...

Evolution of nonoperatively treated symptomatic isolated full-thickness supraspinatus tears.

BACKGROUND The natural history of small, symptomatic rotator cuff tears is currently unclear. The purpose of the present study was to assess the clinical and structural outcomes for a consecutive series of patients with symptomatic, isolated full-thickness supraspinatus tears who had been offered rotator cuff repair but declined operative treatment. METHODS In the study period, twenty-four pa...

A Prospective, Quantitative Evaluation of Fatty Infiltration Before and After Rotator Cuff Repair

BACKGROUND Current evaluation of muscle fatty infiltration has been limited by subjective classifications. Quantitative fat evaluation through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may allow for an improved longitudinal evaluation of the effect of surgical repair on the progression of fatty infiltration. HYPOTHESES We hypothesized that (1) patients with isolated full-thickness supraspinatus tendon...

Factors related to successful outcome of conservative treatment for rotator cuff tears

BACKGROUND Much controversy exists as to the management of full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff. Not all patients with rotator cuff tears require surgical treatment. We have little information whether there are factors that are related to successful outcome of conservative treatment. AIM. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to the successful outcome following cons...

The role of repair tension on tendon to bone healing in an animal model of chronic rotator cuff tears.

Rotator cuff tendon tears are one of the most common shoulder injuries. Although surgical repair is typically beneficial, re-tearing of the tendons frequently occurs. It is generally accepted that healing is worse for chronic tears than acute tears, but the reasons for this are unknown. One potential cause may be the large tensions that are sometimes required to repair chronically torn tendons ...
